The Tour de France has been around for over 100 years. In the early days, there were still no transmissions, brakes did not work very well, and there were many unpaved roads. They were not allowed to get help from support cars or assistants as we do today, and if they got a flat tire, they had to fix it themselves, so they had to ride with tires and tubes wrapped around their own bodies.
