With 70% of Japan’s land area covered by mountains and forests, “pass hunting” across mountain passes and forest roads became popular.
People would carry their bicycles on their shoulders to travel along abandoned roads and unmarked trails deep in the mountains. As a result, everyone modified their bicycles.
